Liberia Records 1977-2005; 1988-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Liberia. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Lutheran Church in Liberia (LCL) in mission efforts. The records are from 1977-2005, but the bulk date from 1988-2002. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. Daniel W. Olson, the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun, and the Rev. Eva Jensen. Record types include typewritten business correspondence, email correspondence, budget requests, annual reports, agenda, newsletters, assistance applications, topical reports, budgets, proposed budgets, balance sheets, project proposals, project reports, land deeds, audit reports, transmittal letters, trip reports, financial statements, circular letters, proceedings, and news releases Subject matter for the series includes evangelism, rural ministry, urban ministry, medical work, theological education, scholarships, the training of midwives, and the civil war and its continuing aftereffects in Liberia, referred to as "the crisis." The series is arranged into subseries for the Lutheran Church in Liberia, education, medical work, projects, mission partners, the civil war in Liberia, records directly related to DGM's work in Liberia, and general subject matter. The subseries for medical work is further divided into records related to Curren Hospital, Phebe Hospital, the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL), and the CHAL support group. The Liberia crisis records are divided into general information on the crisis, relief, and reconstruction. While this series includes records related to the LCL and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records. Arrangement of the records is by subject.
